CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Four-year-old Aniya Day-Garrett went through “prolonged” suffering before she died in March 2018 of a stroke triggered by a beating, a prosecutor told a jury Thursday.
Euclid firefighters found the girl’s stiff, cold and emaciated body beneath a running air conditioner in the Euclid apartment building where she lived with her mother, Sierra Day, and Day’s boyfriend, Deonte Lewis.
“We will prove to you that both of these individuals killed this child,” Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Anna Faraglia told jurors during opening statements in the trial of Day and Lewis. “It was a long, prolonged death.”
