CLEVELAND — The couple who murdered 4-year-old Aniya Day Garrett was ordered to spend the rest of their lives behind bars Wednesday.

Sierra Day, convicted in the murder of her daughter, 4-year-old Aniya Day-Garrett, was sentenced to life without parole. Her boyfriend, Deonte Lewis, also convicted in the crimes, received life in prison with parole eligibility after 20 years.

“I don’t believe in 24 years I’ve seen a more callous disregard for human life than I did with Sierra Day,” Judge Timothy McCormick said prior to announcing the sentences.

Day, 24, and Lewis, 27, were both found guilty to multiple charges earlier this month for the March 2018 murder of Aniya. Her cause of death was cerebral necrosis due to blunt impacts to the head with subdural hematoma, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

When asked if she wished to speak, Day declined.

EUCLID, Ohio — On the one year-anniversary of Aniya Day-Garrett's heartbreaking death, a memorial will take place to celebrate her life.

The 4-year-old was killed by her mother, Sierra Day, and her mother's boyfriend, Deonte Lewis, March 11, 2018. Day and Lewis were convicted on aggravated murder, murder and assault charges in her death last week.

Aniya's father, Mickhal Garrett, says he fought for custody of her prior to her death.

Garrett will lead Monday's memorial at the Cultural Gardens Apartments in Euclid, where Day and Lewis lived and abused Aniya. Police and paramedics responded to the apartments March 11, 2018, and Aniya later died at an area hospital. Investigators said she suffered several blows to the head and died of a stroke.

Monday's memorial, which is set to begin at 6 p.m., is open to the community. A butterfly release in Aniya's honor will take place June 21 at the same location.

The case sparked local outrage after it was learned that Aniya's day cares failed to report signs of abuse. As a result, Get Ready Set Grow in Euclid will shut its doors March 31 after reaching a settlement with the state, which revoked its child care license. The day care's owners cannot apply for a new license for four years.

A May 2017 Euclid police report showed 14 instances of abuse against Aniya dating back to 2015. The cases detail a variety of injuries including bruises, bumps and black eyes. But daycare staff at Harbor Crest failed to contact county children services about the abuse, as required.

A letter sent to Harbor Crest's owners listed 11 violations, including failure to report suspicions of abuse, staff leaving children unsupervised and providing false information when staff presented inaccurate employee records.

Harbor Crest disputed the findings but agreed to retrain its workers.

Aniya Day-Garrett’s father continues to fight for justice for his little girl

EUCLID, Ohio -- A father is still searching for justice, one year after his four-year-old daughter died at the hands of her own mother. The family of Aniya Day-Garrett spent the somber anniversary celebrating her life and demanding change.

“Aniya was only four years old when her precious life was taken one year ago today, March 11th, 2018," her father, Mickhal Garrett, said.

He spent the first anniversary of his daughter's death surrounded by family, friends and supporters. They held a memorial Monday evening in front of the Cultural Garden apartment complex on Lakeshore Boulevard in Euclid, where Aniya lived with her mother and where prosecutors say the little girl was neglected, abused and murdered.

"Each and every time she had a chance, she told social workers; she told daycare workers and she told the hospital and she even told police 'mommy hit me,'" he said.

Thursday, Aniya's mother, 24-year-old Sierra Day; and her boyfriend, 27-year-old Deonte Lewis, were convicted of aggravated murder in the little girl's death. Her father, who tried to get custody of Aniya after suspecting she was being abused, says the system failed her.

"We're fighting to have laws changed; we're fighting to have the Aniya law in place to help protect children all around the world, starting right here in Cuyahoga County," said Aniya’s father.

Mickhal Garrett honored his daughter's young life surrounded by mementos and pictures of the times they shared together.

"There's a picture in the front here of me holding Aniya and she has this very dress on here, with these same shoes. Aniya loved this dress,” he said, holding up the clothing in a frame.

Garrett says holding his daughter's ashes allows him to keep her close by and reminds him that her death will not be in vain.

"I am so thankful; I love you so much, Aniya," he said, clutching the container.

Mickhal Garrett says he is pleased with last Thursday’s guilty verdict and he is happy with the changes being implemented by the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services. Although, he and his attorneys are still trying to find out what went wrong and hold others accountable for Aniya’s death.

Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis will be sentenced on March 20.

Interesting that he got Life with Parole and she didn't but either way I am alright with what each got. Did the mother finally show some emotion when she got sentenced to life?
